Going inland along the SP1 you’ll reach this small town, set at the feet of the Apuan Alps. Camaiore is quite ancient and has got a Latin origin because it was one of the biggest Roman Camps in the area (from the Latin “Campus Maior”). It remained quite important during the Middle Ages, being on the way of “Via Francigena”, the road that was taking the pilgrims from Canterbury to Rome. The city center is nowadays partially closed to traffic, and is crossed in the middle by a main street called “Via Vittorio Emanuele”; on the same street you’ll find a lot of shops and the Cathedral of the city. Don’t miss to taste the local typical food like “Focaccia”, cold cuts and cakes. |
