By car or train, going northbound along Tirreno’s coast, it’s possible to reach in a short time the Liguria Region, where you can visit the famous “Five Lands”, an area included between the towns of Portovenere and Levanto, where you’ll find five villages facing the sea: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. You can also choose to have a funny trip by boat, starting from Viareggio Port (almost every day in high season; information available at Hotel Vittoria’s Reception Desk).
Everyone of those five towns has got a specific feature: in Monterosso, the most ancient, you’ll find the church of “San Giovanni Battista”, the “Fieschi” castle and the native house of Eugenio Montale (a famous Italian poet); in Vernazza the ancient medieval fortifications; in Corniglia the wonderful views on the sea and the village; in Manarola the typical Genoese Tower-houses; in Riomaggiore the Castle and the art pieces hosted inside the “Oratorio di Santa Maria Assunta”.
Moreover you can choose among several walks; the most famous one is for sure the “Via dell’amore” (The Lovers Road) a promenade straight up on the sea and connecting Riomaggiore with Manarola. Here you can discover marvelous views and walk with a large accessibility for all the ages. |
