Archeological Area of Massaciuccoli Romana

Massaciuccoli is a small locality just a short distance from Viareggio, overlooking the eponymous lake. In the past, the town was an important center of Versilia already frequented by Etruscans and Romans.

In the 1st century BC this site was chosen for the construction of two large architectural complexes that have been rediscovered today and can be visited within the Archaeological Area of Massaciuccoli Romana.

These two complexes are the Venulei Villa and a non-specified building with a mosaic.

The Venulei were a very rich Roman family, originally from Pisa, whose name is still reported at the entrance of the house. Their villa extended on two terraces: the upper part housed the rooms of the family and the servants, the lower one was enclosed and kept as a private garden.

The other building, discovered in 1932, was perhaps a small spa or a simple stop stationlinked to the Venulei property. The building had to be decorated with mosaics of white and black tiles that in part came to this day.

The area is still excavated and studied, but in the meantime it is open to the public all year long.
