Grotta del Vento

Grotta del Vento

The Wind Cave is located under Mount Pania, in the Apuan Alps Park. It is one of the most important tourist caves in Europe with three different tourist routes that go into the bowels of the mountain. The bravest visitors can also choose to explore the cave along two adventure itineraries with hiking boots and safety ropes.

The cave entrance is approximately 640 m above sea level, but there are certainly other higher natural passages from which enters the strong wind that characterizes it.

Because of this cool wind, the entrance of the tunnel was well-known to the locals who used it as a natural refrigerator.

However no one entered the cave before the 1800s and the first scientific explorations date back to 1929 only.

Today, after several explorations and studies of various scientific groups, the gallery development is attested to around 4.5 km. Inside there are numerous rock formations“alive” while in the deepest part flows an underground stream and even further down there is a perfectly vertical well about 80 m high.
