Gastronomy of Lake Massaciuccoli

Lake Massaciuccoli is a natural oasis with almost perfectly circular shape. Around this water shade there are several canals and marshy areas that make the lake the largest wetland in Tuscany. The richness of the local flora and fauna has made rightly entered the lake into the protected area of the Natural Park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli. In the area there are in fact some rare native species of plants and flowers, besides the lake’s waters host several migratory birds, small mammals and amphibians.

Visiting the Lake of Massaciuccoli means diving in nature, but it is also impossible to give up to taste the typical local products of the park. The cuisine of this area follows the Tuscan peasant traditions, relying in particular on fisheries and vegetable cultivation, particularly suitable for the local microclimate.

In the vast pinewoods of the area, there is an enormous amount of pine nuts, from which you can also obtain an excellent pesto. Another highly appreciated product is the entirely organic “beach honey” produced along the coast just a few kilometers from the lake.
