Just a few kilometers from Viareggio, going northbound, you can visit Torre del Lago Puccini where the famous composer Giacomo Puccini lived and realized its lyric operas: his Villa (visits available with previous reservation), with the pianos and all the objects that belonged to the musician, it’s a target for the majority of opera lovers. Among its masterpieces let’s remember Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), La fanciulla del West (1910), La rondine (1917) the Trittico (1921). Devoted to women and cars, but also heavy smoker, Puccini due to health reasons decided then to move to another Villa, in the middle center of Viareggio, where he died in 1924.If you have the chance to spend a Summer night in Viareggio, its compulsory to join the Festival Pucciniano, in the new big theater straight on the Massaciuccoli Lake, where Puccini’s operas are usually performed by the voices of the most famous lyric singers. At the Lake you can also have tours by boat, listening to the music of the great master and dipping into the real atmosphere that the composer lived, inside the Natural Park which the Lake is belonging to. Torre del Lago is also famous for its seaside hangouts, crammed with people during the summertime, and for the long beach just inside the Natural Park.
