Carrara marble quarries
Inside Versilia’s area, a few kilometers from the seaside, you can reach the wonderful Apuan Alps, that are visible also from the beaches. The Apuan Alps Park it’s a great chance for the lovers of trekking, climbing or just strolling open air. Apuan Alps are also famous for their well known Marble Quarries, that is possible to visit with the assistance of a local guide. The Marble coming from those mountains is among the most precious in the world; starting from the ancient times of the great Roman Empire, this marble was extracted and used in slabs in order to cover the walls of monuments, or carved into beautiful statues, as for example the famous sculptors and architects Michelangelo Buonarroti and Gianlorenzo Bernini did. Inside the quarries you can enjoy one of the most particular quarry-galleries existing, the Cattedrale di Marmo (Marble Cathedral).
